Vision

This journal envisions becoming an inclusive repository of diverse forms of knowledge on the health of various ecosystems. With this vision, it aims to contribute towards building a world where human species strive to stay in harmony with the other life forms of the world.

Mission

To develop a journal which provides:

    1. Resource material on the latest conceptual and technological developments contributing to understanding of overall health and resilience of ecosystems along with interlinkages between health, ecology and human development.
    2. Knowledge base in diverse formats surpassing the barriers of language and literacy so as to reduce information and power asymmetry.

 

Aim and Objectives

Ecosystem approach considers humans as part of the ecosystem and not at the peak of any food chain.

Ecosystem health deals with the health and well-being of all the biotic and abiotic components of an ecosystem including human, animals, plants, microorganisms to water bodies, soil and atmosphere. 

The purpose of this journal is to bring out the interconnectedness between the human world and other living and non-living beings as well as between hard sciences, social sciences, humanities and arts.

Scope of the Journal

Commentaries, editorials, personal stories, original research articles, review articles, policy briefs etc relating to the interdisciplinary field of ecosystem health are invited for publication.

Alternate ways of expression of knowledge relevant to the grassroot communities in the form of songs, poems, recitations and pictures may also be included. Students, independent researchers, NGO, civil society and academia are welcome to publish here.

The platform aims to offer publications in any Indian language. This multilingual, biannual online journal would also accept videos and photos and stories among other means of online communications. The online journal would be open access.

Types of Publications and Fees

Original research: These include intervention studies, observational studies, studies of screening and diagnostic tests. Manuscript should state an aim and objectives; the design and methods including the study setting and dates, patients or participants with inclusion and exclusion criteria and/ or participation or response rates, or data sources, and how these were selected for the study; the essential features of any interventions; the main outcome measures; the main results of the study; a discussion section placing the results in context with the published literature and addressing study limitations; and the conclusions and relevant implications for clinical practice or health policy. Data included in research reports must be original and should be as timely and current as possible.

A structured abstract is required. A list of 3 to 5 Key Words is required. Maximum length: 8000 words of text (not including abstract, tables, figures, acknowledgments, references, and online-only material) with no more than a total of 5 tables and/ or figures. Charges: ₹ 500

Systematic Reviews: The basic structure of manuscripts reporting Systematic Reviews should include the following: Structured abstract; Introduction; Methods; Results; Discussion; and Conclusions. Maximum length: 8000 words of text (not including abstract, tables, figures, acknowledgments, references, and online-only material), with no more than a total of 5 tables and/ or figures. Charges: ₹ 500

Special cases: Original reports, case studies, stories that address any aspect of ecology and ecosystems, habitats, healthcare, well-being, risk management, health resilience from research, action research or personal experience. Manuscripts that provide new insights and/ or evidence of a holistic and systems thinking approach, are welcome. Abstract is required. A list of 3 to 5 Key Points is required. Maximum length: 5000 words of text (not including abstract, tables, figures, acknowledgments, references, and online-only material) with no more than a total of 5 tables and/or figures. Charges: ₹ 500

Short Reports: Short reports of original studies or evaluations or unique, first-time reports of clinical case series. A structured abstract; list of 3 to 5 Key Points is required. Recommended length: 1500 words (not including abstract, tables, figures, acknowledgments, references, and online-only material) with no more than a total of 3 tables and/ or figures and no more than 15 references. Charges: ₹ 450

Commentary and Book Reviews: Word Limit: 2500

Short, analytical articles on topical and contemporary, social, economic and political developments will be considered for this section. Charges: ₹ 400

Insight and Perspectives: Word limit: 4500

Articles presenting innovative and focused analyses of health, unique hypotheses and preliminary theories, viewpoints and standpoints on existing and contemporary phenomena are welcome for this section. Charges: ₹ 400

Discussion/ Letter to editor: Letters discussing a recent article in this journal should be submitted before the next issue of the journal. Letters received beyond the immediate successive edition may not be considered. Letters should not exceed 400 words of text and 5 references, including the article for which the letter is written. Letters may have no more than 3 authors. The text should include the full name, academic degrees, and a single institutional affiliation for each author and the email address for the corresponding author. Letters must not duplicate other material published or submitted for publication and should not include unpublished data. Letters not meeting these specifications are generally not considered. Letters being considered for publication ordinarily will be sent to the authors of the original article, who will be given the opportunity to reply. Letters will be published at the discretion of the editors and are subject to abridgement and editing for style and content. Charges: ₹ 100

Videos

All video content must be accompanied by a text description of about 100 words. Subtitles in English must be provided for all Indian languages.

Video Stories: Around 7-15 min video as a narrative. An unstructured abstract up to 50 words and list is required. The story requires an introduction – a couple of opening paragraphs, of up to 150 words. In this format, because the video and text combine to tell a story, there must be a narration in the background. Charges: ₹ 550

Video Essays: An introduction, captions and a conclusion. It can be 10-15 min, with narration if required. Charges: ₹ 600

Video album: This video can also be a standalone short movie, extending up to 20 min.Charges: ₹ 650

Photo story: Around 10-12 photos sequenced as a narrative. In this format, the aim is to narrate a visuals-enabled story. An unstructured abstract up to 50 words and list is required. The story requires an introduction – a couple of opening paragraphs, of up to 150 words. In this format, because the images and text combine to tell a story, the total word length should ideally not exceed 800 words. Charges: ₹ 300

Photo Essays: An introduction, captions and a conclusion. It can have 12-15 photographs, with captions not exceeding 50 words each. The captions are the main text. The total word length should ideally not exceed 500. Charges: ₹ 350

Photo album: This ‘slideshow’ can also be a standalone album, with the number of images ranging from 3 to 15. Each photo requires a brief caption. Charges: ₹ 400

Terrarium: Terrarium is an attempt to create a photo repository of the diverse societies on the planet.  From every single community, the aim is to put up portraits of at least one adult male, one adult female, one child and one adolescent human. Apart from these, images of the local terrestrial and aquatic animals, birds, insects, plants, fungi, algae and micro-organisms are also invited. The image sent should be in hi-resolution, and accompanied by the details of the person in the picture and photographer. Shoot image with a camera with GPS facility and a time-stamp. The written consent in a language he/ she understands, of the person being photographed is paramount.

Details required for humans photographed :

Name: Please give the full name of the person in the photo;

Occupation: For example farmer/ laborer/ teacher/ tailor

Parents’ occupation: Where the photo is that of a child/ adolescent, please try and record the parents’ occupation.

Age: Where possible, give the age of the individual.

Address:  The address of his/ her hometown home as stated by the person being photographed. Ideally locate the area on the map and mark the location.

District:

State:

Pin code:

Place where photo was taken: If not at the area already mentioned

For photos of non-human living beings – Local name, Scientific name and Common English name are also required.
